5 Geek Things to do during the Movement Restriction Order!

It was tricky to keep everyone in the nation on the same page of urgency, so it ultimately led to enforcing restriction in peoples movements & trying to expel any large gatherings of people. The suggested quarantine number going around is 14 days. IF you came back from some where? – self quarantine 14 days. You were at a place where there was a confirm positive person? – self quarantine 14 days. So if you’re forced to self quarantine for 14 days… and if you’re a geek – here’s a list on what you can do!

1. WATCHING – This is my daugthers code word for wanting her tab to watch videos. This will also start the list going. WATCHING is gonna represent catching up with movies & TV series we’ve missed. Whether you have Netflix or Astro or Astro Ultra… now is a great time to binge watch provided you have these services as well as broad band internet. Astro is pretty pricey coming in at about RM150+ but the movies you get on HBO, Fox Movies, Cinemas, Warner TV are pretty recent. You also get a number of TV series “same day as US” which is pretty up to date. A way better selection of movie then Netflix with the real obvious difference – ASTRO SUPERSPORTS! Sports is not part of Netflix’s plan. But it’s interesting to note that Astro’s latest offerring the Astro Ultra Box (4K UHD quality) is another step closer to a Netflix layout & strength = ON DEMAND capabilities.
   • On the other hand Netflix is super affordable. Their cheapest TV package is priced at Rm45 a month for 2 screens running at the same time. Netflix is the heavy weight champion of ON DEMAND CONTENT. They have the largest catalogue of TV series (past, present, continuing) I have ever seen. And my favourite are their exclusive (Netflix produced) content – documentaries, TV series like the Netflix Marvel series and certain movies like Bright, Altered Carbon, Triple Frontier, 6 Underground etc. Registration can all be done online within 5 minutes. You just have to select a method of payment that’s most convenient for you. In my case it will be charged to my mobile provider account. Within 5 minutes you can be sorted out with Netflix… how irresistible is that? But wait! You could be first tempted with a one month free trial!! There is a reason why such a phrase exist: “Would you like to come over to my place to ‘Netflix and Chill’?” Most recent news, Netflix just acquired the rights to stream Studio Ghibli titles! Just another iconic anime to the list the long list of ENGLISH dubbed anime on Netflix, not to mention their series of Netflix Original Anime like Castlevania, Ultraman and Godzilla, just to name a few! It’s very impressive to say the least!
   • Option 3: At the very least you would have a UniFi broad band which also comes with UniFi Play TV being able to run on you mobile device! There are a basic load of live channels that run on a schedule like normal terrestrial TV. Some news channels, some sports channels, some kids channels & some movies. Pretty sweet since it already comes with your Unifi broad band subscription. Other alternatives include iFlix, Dimsum, Viu etc. in which we’re not that familiar with nor are they giving free access to review so hey! ^^
2. GAMING – I don’t think things changed much for the e-sport athletes or casual gamers hehe.  They already are mostly in solitude; they would already have the best spec computer devices & best speed internet connection (Y) Just “another day at the office” for these guys haha MMORPGs or Death Match or Capture the Flag… DOTA2, MLBB, FIFA, PUBG or even CS:GO… this is already the PC gamers lifestyle.
   • Anyways for the other side of the gaming coin, there is the console gamers! With this much time now we can begin or continue to embark on our virtual journey / adventure / quest / mission! Death Stranding, Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, Days Gone, Red Dead II, Borderlands 3, Monster Hunter, Yakuza: Kiwami 2, Kingdom Hearts III, Nioh 2, Assassins Creed Odyssey etc. You can’t go out to buy games? Buy online with free delivery from Lazada or Shopee! My buddy Kyo from Kyo’s Game Mart just reminded me, he can’t open table at Amcorp on the weekends but you can still get games & consoles from his online Lazada shop which is oepn 24/7 and Lazada delivers baby!! huhu!    • Now for that’s just for those who want to play alone at home…. If you’re talking about TEAM play… there’s a whole bunch of other games to venture into! First person shooters are especially addictive when you wanna level up!  Level Up and Level up! Unlock and unlock. Best done with a whole bulk of time! 3. READING – remember all those books we previously bought during those Big Bad Wolf Book sale /  Book Xcess / Popular / MPH?? Well now is that time to go ECO or low-tech by picking up a physical book, finding a good spot in your home with sufficient lighting and the comfy chair… then just cruise!And for the geeks like me and friends… it’s time to catch up with our comics stash! Personally, I got stacks of trade paper backs… and when I’m done with that… there’s the artist ART Books, the movie concept art books and there’s the reference guide books 😀
4. MUSIC – if you’re an able musician like me… now is a great time to practice and jam to your favourite songs to get in the groove and then who knows, by the end of the week… you might even want to write a song or two! On another note, if you’ve always wanted to learn an instrument – now too would be a great time to do it too. Learn to play the acoustic guitar, electric guitar, ukulele, piano, bass or drums like Scott Lang in Antman & the Wasp! There are loads of free tutorials on the web… especially on Youtube.

5. CRAFTING – out all these top 5 things, only CRAFTING (maybe some measure of MUSIC) is unique to fact that we can only get better by putting time into it. How do we get better at drawing? You just have to draw… and draw… and draw. Talent does play a role in this but I would just define ‘talent’ as someone who has a natural ability to pick up a skill or craft faster than the average person. Example (hypotactically): if the average person needs 100 drawing hours to reach a ‘level 10 artist’… a person with natural artistic talent would take maybe 50 – 80 hours depending on the individual. No two people are exactly the same, just as no two people’s ability are exactly the same. So the bottom line is to keep working on our craft to keep improving. We can’t rely on our natural talent forever. We have to keep striving to be the best we can be. Drawing, sketching, story writing, origami, cooking, sewing, colouring Keep it up!

*Tidy & Clean you collectibles – wipe the dust from the boxes. Change your displays but put back some into the boxes and taking out some other ones.

*Take Stock – I like to make a list of my collectible…only because it’s to many & too broad of items to just remember off hand. And while you’re at it, it would be great to put it’s value or rather how much you paid for it. Someday I want to estimate what my entire collection is worth xD

*Tidy Stock – from time to time… we might feel that certain things in our collection were an impulse buy and we don’t really see it as a keeper. So if you don’t remember buying a particular item or forgot entire when / where you bought something or why even? Maybe you might want to clear some space and sell it off! Get that money and buy something you’re really looking forward to.
